Do's and Don't of Exfoliation

Exfoliating on a consistent basis is a great way to get rid of dead skin cells and help speed up the skin renewal process. Consistent usage leads to improved skin texture, smoother skin, and less clogged pores. But too much of a good thing in this case can cause irritation and redness, leaving your skin worse than what you started off with.

It’s recommended to only exfoliate a few times a week, because if you exfoliate every day your skin will become too sensitive and damaged. Start once a week, and then gradually build up to two or three times a week if your skin can handle it. Typically, dryer skin only requires exfoliation once a week while oily skin can handle two to three times a week. There is also no need to exfoliate more than once a day, even if you haven’t done it in a while.

When using a physical exfoliant like a scrub or exfoliating brush, gentle motions are effective in removing dead skin cells, so there is no need to harshly scrub and pull the skin. Take the product or tool and apply to skin in circular motions. For chemical exfoliants, use the recommended amount spread across your skin and dont overapply. Always patch test when trying out a new product to test your skin’s sensitivity.
